Protecting your money…

Every few weeks, I take cash out of the bank for our budget. We pay cash for as much as possible because it’s a great way to visualize our spending habits.

I pull out $300 for our food, gas, laundry, misc. budget and place it in envelopes at home. I try to go directly home and make NO stops. For some reason, I feel like everyone knows I’m carrying cash and they are all going to rob me. I even eye up the bank security guard – you just never know these days.

I realized that I have become so focused on protecting my cash that my feelings border on… crazy.

Last night, I put the cash on my bed to dole it out across the envelopes and my dogs jumped up to great me.

I don’t know how to admit this…but…

I dove over the cash to protect it… from my 8 pound dogs. Was I somehow afraid they’d steal it and buy a truckload of rawhide?

This is a new level of pathetic. There is a good side though (and trust me, I had to think about it for hours – and eventually just make up a reason this could be a good thing), I’m beginning to understand the real value of my money.

$300 before? A fun weekend in Palm Springs. $300 now? Violently protected from harmless Chihuahuas.

I work from home so never seen any of my money as it goes direct into my account. But in some ways it is a good thing and really helps me to keep an eye on my finances.

Can you go into detail on how much you budget for food, gas, laundry, etc., out of the $300? My hubby is great with cash – I rely on my debit card for everything and I think that I would greatly benefit from going the cash route.

Do you keep the cash at home and only take what you need, when you need it? I just loathe carrying cash, I feel like you do…I might get robbed!

At least your not fighting a two-year old over a found dime. How bad is that???

se the envelope system myself and carry around $400 on my persons at any given time. It made me nervous the first week but it was fine after that. Kudos to you that $300 can cover all of those envelopes. I am a micro-manager so I have about 24 envelopes:) $275 for 2 weeks of groceries for a family of 5, $50 for 2 weeks of gas(Honda Civic), $40 for 2 weeks of toiletries and yadayadayada:)

I just started the envelope system today. Thanks for the encouragement as giving up my debit card has been my last hold out for the ability to spend beyond my means at a weak moment. I cut it in half and will live on cash.

I think the dogs you have are not exactly cash cows.
Consider getting rid of them too.
That’ll save some good bucks too.
