Keeping perspective on finances…

My coworker was murdered yesterday.

Several of us were unfortunate enough to face his body for four hours until it was cleared by the police to be removed by the coroner.

It was random. There was no reason.

Seeing death in person is hard.

I went home. I made dinner. I couldn’t help but feel sadness for his wife who among other things… wasn’t making dinner for her husband tonight.

I looked at my husband who sat laughing at one of his silly TV shows, totally oblivious to my sadness. I brought him his dinner, hugged him, and told him I loved him.

Sometimes we focus so much on our finances that we forget to enjoy life. I’m often thinking about the next payment, the next payoff, and the next financial goal. I come home and excitedly get the mail so I can see how low the new balances are… and I forget sometimes to kiss the man I love hello.

Finances are vitally important… but in all the hoopla that comes with it, we can’t forget to take a moment and enjoy the life we have.

Tomorrow is NOT guaranteed.

Holy cow – I am so sorry to hear that. And seriously? If your work ends up offering counseling, think about taking them up on the offer. Doesn’t matter if he was your cubicle mate or if you barely knew him, that sounds very traumatic.

So sorry…what a horrible thing to happen. You work in an office or what? Many readers are going to be compelled to want more details I’m afraid. Is everyone else in your place of employment OK?

I have to second Michelle – counseling can’t hurt.

I can’t clarify what type of environment I work in, it would give away where I work. It has happened before, and I’m sure it will happen again. Sadly… it’s something I need to ‘get used to’. It doesn’t make it any less difficult.
