New job skills?
Thanks to the nature of the company I work for, our meetings are occasionally held publically. They are often televised or played on the radio… though I think our audience is primarily retirees and community involved stay at home mothers.
I’d never thought about our audience… until this week.
We were forced to cut our public services by more than 20% due to the poor economy. A crowd had formed in our meeting room to protest the cuts. The police were called to control the situation… but not before I got stuck in the back of the room.
Amazingly, our president was able to calm the situation but I decided not to stick around. The crowd was unpredictable and the debate was starting. Rather than try to get through the violent crowd, I snuck out the back stairwell door just as the meeting was called to order.
The stairs are metal and worn down. They tend to be a little slippery even in the best of conditions but the rain had recently leaked through the roof and had started to run down the stairs. I quietly started to tip toe down when…
My plastic pink hi-heels slipped out from under me.
Hey! Plastic pink hi-heels are not limited to usage by Barbie dolls and strippers… but perhaps they should be in times such as these.
Slippery floors + metal stairs + plastic pink hi-heels + a business skirt = not a good combo
I’m trying to ‘live like no one else’, and that means no new shoes.
I SLAMMED down the stairs, the noise echoing loudly off the walls. I heard my fall reverberate though the televised speakers… after the required five second delay of course. Then there was a 10 second pause of perfect silence in the upstairs room.
I’m not sure if the police thought a bomb went off or if the crowd was trying to figure out what idiot fell down a flight of stairs during such an important meeting.
Before anyone had a chance to check, I yanked myself off the floor and ran for the secured door to swipe my badge. I half ran, half limped away chanting, ‘Please God, no broken bones… and no blood.’ I was terrified someone would catch up to me – not even realizing that someone would have to fall down the stairs at the same lightening speed. I had a pretty good head start.
I didn’t think things could get worse….
I was wrong.
