Going out when you’re broke…
It’s Friday!
Time to spend time with your honey? Your friends? Your family?
Oh. But you’re on a budget. You can’t right?
My husband and I have discovered cheap, fun ways to get out on a Friday night without ruining your perfectly planned budget.
OK, so no one has a perfect budget… but we can all pretend.
If you are into sports but can’t afford the NFL….
Consider your local colleges. We attend SDSU games for $5 – $10 – for GREAT seats and we have a fabulous time!
If you’re the theater type…
Check into e-mail lists or age/student discounts. Our local theater has an ‘Under 30’ club that offers 50 – 60% off regular prices.
Consider mid-week showings. We can often save $10 by going on Thursday instead of Friday or Saturday afternoon instead of Saturday night.
Sign up for e-mail alerts or mailing lists. During the slow months, we were able to see Broadway shows for $7!
Want a dinner out?
Look into your local magazines for coupons. New restaurants often offer two for one dinners.
Sign up for the mailing lists of your favorite restaurants. Right now is a tough time for restaurant businesses. I get e-mails offering 50% off meals almost weekly.
Look into the city offerings. Twice yearly, San Diego offers ‘Restaurant Week’. Participating restaurants offer their menus at $20, $30, and $40. These fabulous places usually go for two or three times the price any other time of year.
Go back to nature…
Rent a book from your local library and walk, bike, or hike around your neighborhood. I was surprised to find out how much I was missing!
See a movie…
Check your local discount retailer for tickets. When movie prices are upwards of $11.00 in San Diego, I appreciate the $7.50 tickets offered at Costco.
What do you do for free or cheap?
By the way… don’t forget to buy flowers for your sweetie tomorrow. Costco. $12 for 2 dozen. She’ll love them.

I miss living near a college – I used to live near two private schools and it was amazing how many events they would host and invite the community to. I would attend some awesome free concerts, free movies, etc.

Restaurant.com has gift certificates to restaurants all over the country that you can purchase for discounted prices – like $10 for $3, or $25 for $10, etc. Great way to save on eating out!

I was excited to pick-up some discount movie tickets at Costco. I think they were 15% or 20% off. Also, I bought an orchid for $19.99 and my wife loves them. They can stay in bloom for months while roses die within days.
