Continuing the quest to eat healthy on a budget…
I’ve been continuing my attempts at eating healthy on a tiny food budget and I’m making progress.
I’ve been buying whole chickens off the super mark down section of the grocery store and freezing them. I paid $2 each! I either cut them into parts for soups and salads or slow cook the whole bird.
I’ve been buying fruits and vegetables according to the ripening season. It’s something I never paid attention to but it has been quite the cost saver! A few fruits currently in season – and cheap – are: Bananas, Oranges, and Grapefruit.
I’ve also been watching the ads from grocery stores that I get in the mail. Who knew those were useful for anything but catching car oil and wrapping gifts?!?
But my favorite of all…
I found an all natural snack bar for 79 cents. It contains flax seeds, grains, and sesame seeds. The seeds are packed tightly together and held by an unidentifiable sticky substance… water?…honey?…bird poop?
The bar has no sugar, no gluten, and no preservatives.
It’s a little tough to chew though. In fact, I think I’d have an easier time gnawing off my own arm.
But… I love them.
Mostly because the thought that I’m eating the same diet as my long dead crazy cockatoo gives me the creeps and ruins my appetite for a few hours. It even smells the same.
Smells like his food, not the dead bird.
Oh.
I guess there are better reasons, more level headed ones, to like foods…
Whatever.
Anyway, you should try one out. I can’t remember the brand name but they sell them at Vons. Scan the healthy aisle and when you see packaging in seven different languages – none of them English – you’ve hit the jackpot.
