Making Mistakes…
In my previous construction related job, if an error was made I would deny it was me.
Whatever it was could have had my full name, my job title, my company, my social security number, and the name of my first pet and… I’d still point my finger at the next lowest man on the totem pole. Like they say on the jobsite – crud flows downhill.
Heck, that’s the whole reason you seek advancement!
Unfortunately, I am employed with a company that does work for and with the Federal Government. Things are… a little more serious.
I was preparing a package and neglected to burn one file on a CD.
One stinkin’ file.
Before I caught my mistake, I sent out the package certified mail to six vendors. I contemplated brushing my mistake under the carpet or at least ignoring it in the hopes no one would notice but I decided to come clean to my supervisor.
You’d have thought I had just launched a nuclear attack on the great state of New York.
OK, so he didn’t react that way at all. He actually called it a “negative 2” on a scale of one to ten – but that didn’t mean I didn’t have to fill out the 18 inch tall stack of paperwork explaining the error of my ways. I spent four hours drafting management paperwork and another hour contacting vendors – who laughed at me. Seems like a common theme in my life.
Gotta love government work.
