Exercising when time is tight

Thanks to my new work schedule, I don’t have time to exercise… not that I exercised much in the first place… but I like to try.

My job at the Big Box Store keeps me moving but I started to feel lethargic while sitting at my Company X desk. So…I decided to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

I thought this was a great idea but…

I work on the tenth floor.

The TENTH floor.

On my first try, I started heaving like a pack a day smoker by the 3rd flight of stairs.

Oh but wait, it gets better. I thought it would be a good idea to take the stairs twice daily.

I haven’t been able to walk without looking like a gimp since.

That’s it. I think I’ll just eat less.

It’s easier.

I bet you’ll get better at it. I take the stairs at my office, too, though it’s only on the 3rd floor.

What I usually recommend is walking up one flight, walking down two flights. So if you work on 10, ride the elevator to 9 and then walk. Coming down, stop on 3 and then walk down from there.

Make time to exercise. It is too important to ignore.

Check out my blog so you can get motivated to climb those stairs again! Oh, and fit in some yoga too, you’ll walk better:)

if you eat less you’re not going to get any fitter. build yourself up to it, don’t try and do the whole 10 flights at once. my shopping plaza has a 5 storey carpark and i usually park up the top and don’t use the lifts.

I’d recommend Burnside Hall…15 flights of stairs…well, 15 x 2 right? You’ll totally get the stairway exercise! : )

I like disneysteve’s idea of building up to it. Yes, go with that. Good stuff.

For cardio like that, you definitely want to work up to it. 3 flights your first time out is not too shabby.

And if you train for going down all 10 flights of stairs you can also consider it a way to prepare yourself for earthquake. Don’t give up.

When the weather is awful, I use the stairs in my 38-story apartment building. You just have to pace yourself – you can’t take 10 flights of stairs at the same rate that you take 2. I count Mississippis. Take the first 2 flights at normal pace to get your heart rate up, then slow down to Mississippis. It’ll be easy to figure out how and when to speed up as you get used to it, and it’s easy to track your progress because you’ll go from doing, say, 10 flights in 4 minutes to 10 flights in 3:30. Don’t give up just yet!
