Oh. You really expect me to know that…
I had an interview with a local government agency a week ago. Surprisingly, the interview went well and they called to schedule another interview that will include…
A test of my skills.
Hmm. I guess I had hoped they would simply believe me when I said I classified myself as advanced in Microsoft Office and leave it at that but…
They decided to test me and see if my definition of ‘advanced’ was actually advanced or simply the ability to open a new document.
I’ve been working with the Microsoft Office Suite for the past ten years but the obsessive school nerd in me is still in a panic. I ran out and bought a ‘Step by Step Guide to Microsoft Office’ and have been studying diligently since I received the call.
What are the chances I can cram 872 pages in by next Tuesday?
Oh, and I robbed the $32.50 needed to purchase the book from our food fund. Soooo…
Ramen anyone?

Good luck cramming…that is a lot of pages. You can probably skim over most of them because they are simple like opening a work document, saving a document etc.
Hope you get the job or whatever it is.

That’s the way to do it! Just skim over the pages right before the test and you’ll have no problems!

Have faith … you’re going to be fine and I think you’ll pleasantly surprise yourself. Just focus on Microsoft Excel - that’s the one that trips me up everytime!

You could have tried to borrow a book like it from your public library.

I was in the same situation and did the same thing (but I got two books from the library). Once I got into the books, I realized I knew a lot more than I thought I did; I’d used Microsoft Office suite for years too, but hadn’t used Excel or PowerPoint as much and was nervous about those in particular. I think everyone else here has the right idea … you’ve got a great base of knowledge/experience, and skimming over any areas you’re unsure about is probably all you need to do. Oh … I did great on my testing, and I ended up getting the job!! My fingers are crossed for the same outcome for you!!

Maybe you can return those books if you kept the receipt, plus returns are easier on the holidays. Or even resell on eBay unless you honestly think you’re going to be reading them again in the future.
